Vulnerable persons are those who, because of their age, disability, or other circumstances, are in a position of dependence on others or are otherwise at a greater risk than the general population of being harmed by persons in a position of authority or trust relative to them. This code of conduct is a set of statements about appropriate and expected behaviour of Toronto Zoo staff and volunteers working directly or indirectly with children or individuals from the vulnerable sector. Adherence to this code necessarily involves a commitment to: View the well-being of the individual child as having fundamental importance Acknowledge the uniqueness of each person Take into account the critical impact of self esteem on an individual’s development Work to ensure that children are not discriminated against on the basis of gender, age, race, religion, language, ability, culture or national origin Engage only in practices which are respectful of, and provide security for, children and individuals from the vulnerable sector and in no way degrade, endanger, exploit, intimidate, or harm them psychologically or physically. Protocol for Staff Working with Children or the Vulnerable Sector Our mission is to provide learning environment that is safe, nurturing, positive and respectful. Volunteers and Staff shall: Help to establish safe and open communication Treat all with respect and dignity befitting their age Be conscious of others’ space Encourage participation by all, while being sensitive to each person’s individual capacity Be a role model for children. Be friendly, courteous and kind. Report to your supervisor, any suspected inappropriate behaviour exhibited by colleagues or any other person including other children Volunteers and Staff shall not: Show favouritism for particular individuals Have private talks with children or those from the vulnerable sector away from the presence of other staff or volunteers Demonstrate first aid on an individual Assist children with personal hygiene or dressing without the presence of another staff person Take part in inappropriate body contact games or activities Let individuals involve you in excessive attention-seeking behaviour that is overtly physical or sexual in nature. Be particularly careful with very needy individuals. Redirect the behaviour to “healthy” activities and provide caring attention before it is asked for. Physical Contact: When dealing with children, or those from the vulnerable sector, there is acceptable touching and unacceptable touching. A handshake is generally acceptable; a brief hug is sometimes acceptable; and an embrace is usually unacceptable. Touching which gives offence or causes any unease is not acceptable. Holding is appropriate if it is perceived that an individual presents a danger to himself or others.
