Kristi received her biology degree from Grand Valley State University.  She was lead zookeeper at the Childrens Zoo at Celebration Square in Saginaw, Michigan, and in management at Pet Supplies Plus before finally landing her postion as a Zookeeper at John Ball Zoo.  Kristi says that although zookeeping sounds simple, it is really very involved especially because you must establish trust with your animals.  She really enjoys working with birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.  Her favorite area to work is the frogs and her favorite animal, the penguins.

Most people don’t realize that in our petting corral area houses more than our goats and sheep! The whole second level of the barn contains what we call our education animals.

These animals are the ones that go out to visit schools and libraries. They also occasionally come out into the zoo to be touched and seen by you, our visitors! One of those animals     you haven’t seen yet. Her name is Major and she is our Military Macaw

This past winter I was given an opportunity to become scuba certified through a grant John Ball Zoo had received. I felt extremely lucky! For those of you who have gone through scuba certification, you understand how expensive it can be! Myself, and 2 other keepers worked with Moby's dive shop and passed our open water dive on a chilly November evening in 50 degree water! Little did we realize that was going to be the normal temperature we would be diving in!
