We cut down on the amount of hosing we do in the exhibit so as to reduce humidity, which is bad for egg development. You might wonder why have them breed at all if it makes the building smell. The main reason is the penguins are a managed population in zoos. Without breeding, we would have to take birds from the wild which would affect their conservation status. This way, zoos can produce enough chicks to maintain their populations. Currently, 15 zoos hold Magellanic Penguins. We all participate in the program, exchanging birds to maintain gene diversity. I’d like to include a scratch and sniff with this blog, but they tell me computers don’t work that way. So you will have to stop by the zoo between now and July to smell for yourself.
